Let's stand up for education!

The NUT has announced a national strike across England and Wales on Wednesday 26 March in pursuit of the disputes that Michael Gove has caused with the profession around pay, pensions and conditions. In the run up to the strike we will engage in all talks and encourage our members to leaflet parents and engage with politicians.

We're asking all members to:

   join a leafleting campaign aimed at parents and the public in every town and city
   take part in influencing Parliamentary candidates in every marginal constituency and beyond
   prepare for strike action in state schools, academies and sixth form colleges across England and Wales on March 26th

We have produced a leaflet for parents that can be downloaded here in colour and here in black and white. This information is relevant to parents in England. Information for parents in Wales will follow soon.

The NUT National Executive has taken these decisions against the background of Michael Gove’s continuing refusal to try to resolve - or even to discuss with us - the matters in dispute. The NASUWT National Executive meets next week.

It is clear that, as a result of his disputes with teachers, Michael Gove's position is increasingly being challenged. The time to take further action and to stand up for education is now.

Teachers’ New Year Message

The latest YouGov survey of a representative sample of teachers is a damning indictment of Michael Gove’s time as Secretary of State for Education. The survey (2nd January) finds that:

   Morale in the teaching profession continues to fall and three quarters (74%) of teachers say their morale has declined since the last general election.
   52% of teachers are less likely to stay in the profession as a result of changes to teachers' pay and pensions, and 57% are less likely to stay as a result of changes to teacher’s conditions.
   In one of the richest countries in the world, almost half (49%) of teachers report malnutrition or hunger affecting the ability of pupils to concentrate.
   87% of teachers would rank Ofsted as inadequate or requiring improvement.

Michael Gove has confirmed a 1% pay increase for teachers from Sept 2013, click here for details.

Teachers’ pay increase for 2014
The NUT’s December 2013 submission to the STRB, reaffirms the NUT’s view that teachers’ pay levels need to be increased significantly. The NUT submission rejects the Government’s public sector pay cap. It calls on the STRB to assert its independence and make recommendations on pay to secure the supply of teachers and address growing problems of recruitment, retention and morale.
